  • Fixing Flickering on LED Strips: 95% Are Power Supply or Voltage Drop Issues.

Date Published: May 25, 2026 Published By: LED World Staff

If your LED strips are flickering, strobing, or only lighting up in sections, you’re not alone — and you’re probably just one quick fix away from perfect performance. At LED World Lighting, we’ve seen this issue on thousands of commercial and high-end residential installs. The good news? 95% of flickering on LED strips is caused by either the power supply or voltage drop.

Here’s the exact troubleshooting guide our technicians use every day. Follow these steps and you’ll have steady, flicker-free lighting in minutes.

High-density LED strip showing flickering and voltage drop issues

The Two Biggest Culprits (95% of Cases)

    1. Wrong or Undersized Power Supply
High-density strips like EvenBright™ pull significantly more current than standard strips. A cheap or under-rated driver simply can’t deliver clean, stable power.

    2. Voltage Drop Over Long Runs
Even with the correct 24V driver, resistance in the wire and strip itself causes voltage to drop the farther you go from the power source. Below 22V the LEDs start flickering or dimming at the end.

    Quick Diagnosis Checklist

    1. Does the entire strip flicker or only the far end?
Entire strip = power supply issue. Far end only = voltage drop.
    2. Does it flicker when you first turn it on or after running for a while?
After running = overheating or undersized driver.
    3. Are you using a 12V driver on a 24V strip (or vice versa)?
Instant mismatch = flickering or no light.
    4. Is the power supply warm or hot to the touch?
      Overloaded driver = unstable output.

    Step-by-Step Fixes That Actually Work

Fix #1 – Upgrade to the Right Power Supply

Use only Class 2 dimmable LED drivers rated for at least 20% more wattage than your total strip load. Our built-in dimmer drivers are specifically designed for high-density strips and eliminate 90% of flickering instantly.

Fix #2 – Eliminate Voltage Drop

Run 18 AWG or thicker wire from driver to strip. For runs longer than 16 ft, add power injection every 12–16 ft. 24V strips allow much longer runs than 12V.

    Fix #3 – Proper Wiring & Connections

Tighten all screw terminals. Use solderless connectors or proper soldering on high-density strips. Loose connections = instant flicker.

    Pro Tips

    • Always calculate total wattage × 1.2 for headroom
    • Never daisy-chain power supplies — use one quality driver or parallel feed
    • Mount drivers in well-ventilated areas (not inside tight enclosures)

Stop fighting flickering and start enjoying perfectly smooth, professional lighting. The EvenBright™ Series paired with our matched Class 2 drivers is the combination contractors and designers trust for zero headaches.
